Gemma Burgess
Physiotherapist
Gemma grew up on the outskirts of London but made the permanent move to south London following the completion of her Physiotherapy degree at Cardiff University in 2019. Gemma’s interest in physiotherapy started from a young age having had personal experience with sporting injuries and post-operative rehabilitation. She has participated in many sports and competed as a national level trampolinist as well as being a county level swimmer and hockey player. A few years ago she discovered CrossFit in which she regularly competes at a high level and you will often see her working out within the Sleven arches. Gemma has developed a specialist interest in the rehabilitation of CrossFit athletes following this and can work with you to get you back to training as well as back to performance.
Over the last 5 years as a qualified physiotherapist Gemma has worked across several of the leading London NHS Trusts in various specialties including neuro rehabilitation where she worked with patients with complex rehabilitation needs such as those who have suffered strokes and spinal cord injuries. She was also based on ICU during the Covid-19 pandemic through which she gained valuable life and clinical experience.
She then specialised in musculoskeletal medicine which is where her passion lies, and now balances her work at The Running Room with her role as a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at the world-renowned Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. She has a vast amount of experience working in specialist Back Clinics, Carpal Tunnel Clinics and Peripheral Joint (Shoulders, Hips, Knees & Ankles) Clinics within the NHS and is well-versed in many rehab modalities including hydrotherapy and gym-based rehabilitation. A well-respected clinician, she is also a guest lecturer at King’s College London where she teaches on the Physiotherapy program.
Gemma is passionate about helping her patients achieve their full potential regardless of their background, from elite athletes to those who have never exercised before, and will work with you to improve your health and quality of life through exercise.
She holds several extra qualifications including Sports Massage Level 2 and is an AACP-trained Acupuncturist which are tools that can help you to get the most from your rehabilitation and progress towards your goals quicker. Alongside her work and training she is committed to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and is even managing to find the time to do some MSc modules to further her knowledge and skills.
